PETA makes me want to hurt animals

The title isn't true, just eye catching. So PETA has been going crazy for years. And this just upsets me since I come from a background of overweight family. So yeah I mean just check this billboard out, do we really need this kind of Vegetarianism in the U.S.? Short answer, No. http://airamerica.com/montelacrossamerica/blog/2009/aug/19/fat-women-beached-whales-audio

Citizen POV: Los Angeles and Green Washing.

In this interview with a 15 year veteran of the city, I discuss some of the pressing issues of the day. We get some genuine and thoughtful comments about the people, and culture of L.A. As I began to transcribe this conversation I realized that listening to Gi speak was far more revealing than the text alone. I now encourage you to listen to that audio, but here is the beginning of our conversation anyways. R.V: So we are here in L.A. to talk about urban sustainbility, to talk about tranpostation issues, permaculture, and just to think about those kinds of issues that the city is facing. NO all we want to do is ask a person, and good people off the street to comment on their opinions of LA. So I am here with “Gi” and how long have youw lived in L.A? Gi: Uh 14 years its going to be 15 in September. R.V: What makes L.A. different from any-other place you’ve lived? Gi: Maybe the weather first thing, its always sunny for sure. Its a big suburb ya know, there’s no center. There’s no n

Urban Agriculture and Community Learning Center

RickyVegas, Guillem P., Diego R., Jeremy H. As we grow as metropolitans we often loose sight of the systems of agriculture that allow us to thrive in an emerging society of science and technology. At the same time we are being marginalized from those systems of production and know less and less about the world around us. Our mission is to create an environment of learning, sharing , and volunteering that benefits local communities by empowering them to know about agricultural systems and participate in the growing and production of crops within an urban domain. The idea of skyscraper farms is becoming more viable and a serious consideration as we see the negative effects of trucked in foods that sometimes come thousands of mile from their original source. The plan to build a rotund one acre Urban Farm can be adapted either from absorbing a warehouse, parking garage, or other large are a structure would allow us to develop a three story farm that uses a design specific for the ur

Get Stung by a New Idea

So in High School I took a class on Entomology. After being amazed by the various insects and capturing a few in the wild, The Tarantula Hornet was the one that got away, I became very interested in the potential "uses" of insects. One Day, I was visiting Berkeley during their Entomology Departments get together day or something, and what did I find? Cooked Bugs. There were Chocolate covered Crickets, Roasted Roaches, Fryed Scorpions, and more. It got me thinking a lot. Most bugs are like 30-60 percent protein. What if we dropped our Cow dependency affect disorders and started harvesting Bugs? ( Image Taken From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Insect_food_stall.JPG) Its called Entomophagy , and its a great idea. Bugs are naturally beneficial to our environments, and with certain species experiencing an unnatural decline in population, such as Honey Bees, we are seeing adverse effects such as lower Pecan Production in California, due to the fact they are pollinat

Saving the world by Saving ourselves: Less Meat equals more Water

Some people are overtly aware of the dangerous environmental impact that heard farming of cattle has caused in this country. There aren't really any good statistics that I have found questioning the average knowledge about water scarcity and its misappropriation towards cattle feed production. Did you know that in California there is more water going into the production of Alfalfa and Grain than towards human consumed produce? Its true. That means that water shortages could be eliminated in California all together if just 1/3 of meat production was halted, you should also stop watering your sidewalks, and lawns are unnatural during a drought, didn't you know? There would(and should) be less subsidies for these farmers and this would cause meat prices to go up. But the whole of society does not appreciate just how damaging "on demand meat" has had on our diets, our environment and our social culture. What's more American than eating a 72oz port steak? No other count

Making Cities

What Makes a City? 1. The ability to have a foreign source of agriculture that mediates the interactions of a civil state. 2. Having Public Service and Infrastructures to support them. (EG: Hospitals, School Districts, Police and Public Transit.] 3. A Governing body such as the Senate state in Greek Times, a body of elected or Ruling officials that look over the well being of the denizens. 4. A center of population, commerce, and culture; a town of significant size and importance. 5. A highly populated center exchanging, beyond monetary goods, the cultural products and ideologies of a society that are perpetuated by its people. A New York state of mind. Green Architecture It use to be that Green Architecture was a negative asset to a building that would suffer from uninspired design and create a kind of eco-banality. In a city where appearances come first it might be hard to break the mold and create a new kind of design methodology. LA’s cutting-edge architectural designs use les
